Overview

The Jomolhari–Lingshi Trek is one of Bhutan’s most iconic and rewarding high-altitude treks, taking you deep into Jigme Dorji National Park, one of the most pristine protected areas in the Himalayas. This classic route offers breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m), Jichu Drake, Gangchhenta, and other snow-clad peaks, while passing through remote villages, yak pastures, alpine lakes, and sacred mountain passes.

Ideal for seasoned trekkers, this journey combines dramatic Himalayan scenery, rich Buddhist culture, and rare wildlife encounters, making it a must-do adventure for serious trekking enthusiasts visiting Bhutan.

Itinerary

Distance: 23 km | Trek Duration: ~8 Hours
Campsite Altitude: 3,610 m
Overnight: Tented Campsite

Depart Paro early in the morning for a scenic 3-hour drive to Gunetshawa via the historic Drukgyel Dzong. After completing permit formalities, begin your trek with a gradual ascent along the Pa Chhu River, entering Jigme Dorji National Park.

Walk through forests and open valleys before reaching Soi Thangthangkha, your first campsite. Weather permitting, enjoy your first spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari rising majestically above the valley.

Today’s trek passes traditional yak herder settlements such as Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang, where locals may offer fresh yak dairy products.

The trail gradually ascends to Jangothang, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful base camps in the Himalayas. Surrounded by chortens and prayer flags, the campsite offers jaw-dropping views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) and nearby peaks.

 

Overnight: Tented Campsite

Spend the day acclimatizing with optional hikes to nearby viewpoints and alpine lakes. Enjoy close-up views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, and keep an eye out for wildlife such as blue sheep.

A highly recommended excursion is the hike to Tshophu Lake, a pristine high-altitude lake known for its abundance of trout and scenic mountain reflections.

Cross the spectacular Nyile La Pass, one of the highest points of the trek, offering sweeping views of Jichu Drake and Tserim Kang.

Descend gradually to Lingshi Village, the last permanent settlement in this remote valley. Time permitting, take an optional hike toward Tserim Kang Base Camp, known for wildlife sightings and pristine fishing spots.

Highest Point: Yele La Pass (4,820 m)
Campsite Altitude: 4,110 m
Overnight: Tented Campsite

Today’s challenging trek crosses Yele La Pass, rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari, Gangchhenta, Tserim Kang, and Masang Gang.

Descend into a wide alpine valley to your campsite at Shodu, set beside a mountain stream amidst open meadows.

Distance: 16 km | Trek Duration: 5–6 Hours
Campsite Altitude: 3,680 m

Follow the Thimphu Chhu River through a dramatic canyon landscape, crossing the river multiple times and passing through cypress and pine forests.

Reach Barshong, marking the end of the trek. From here, transfer by road to your accommodation in Thimphu or Paro, concluding this unforgettable Bhutan Himalayan adventure.
