Itinerary

Upon arrival at NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport, begin your journey to Bhutan's border town Phuentsholing. Our representative will greet you and assist with hotel check-in.

Phuentsholing is the gateway to Bhutan for travelers entering by road. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, it beautifully blends Indian and Bhutanese cultures, offering vibrant markets and unique architecture.

In the evening, visit Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, a serene temple located at the town center, representing the heavenly abode of Guru Rinpoche.
Later, explore the Phuentsholing market.

Overnight in Phuentsholing (Altitude: 300m).

After breakfast, drive towards Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. En-route visit:

  • Kharbandi Gompa – a monastery built in 1967 by the Royal Grandmother. It houses statues of Guru Rinpoche and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal with stunning valley views.
  • Gedu Viewpoint – ideal for photography.
  • Chukha & Chimakothi villages
  • Chuzom – the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers.

Arrive in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital known for its perfect harmony of modern life and ancient culture. It is also one of the few capitals in the world without traffic lights.

Spend the evening exploring Thimphu’s city center.

Overnight in Thimphu (Altitude: 2,320m).

After breakfast, enjoy a full day exploring Thimphu’s key attractions:

  • Memorial Chorten – built in memory of the third King, a sacred site for locals.

  • Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point) – one of Bhutan’s tallest Buddha statues offering panoramic views.

  • Changangkha Lhakhang – a 12th-century temple known for newborn blessings.

  • Takin Preserve (Motithang) – home to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin.

Post-lunch sightseeing includes:

  • National Library – houses ancient Buddhist manuscripts.

  • Institute for Zorig Chusum – the famous Painting School teaching 13 traditional arts.

  • Textile Museum – showcasing Bhutan’s intricate weaving traditions.

  • Folk Heritage Museum – dedicated to rural Bhutanese lifestyle.

  • Trashichhoedzong – a grand fortress-monastery and the seat of Bhutan’s government and the King’s throne room.

Explore the Local Crafts Bazaar in the evening.

Overnight in Thimphu.

Drive to Dochu La Pass (3,088m) offering spectacular views of the eastern Himalayas. On a clear day, witness peaks like Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest mountain.

Continue towards Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan.

Afternoon visit to:

  • Punakha Dzong – the “Palace of Great Happiness,” spectacularly located between the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers.

  • Chimi Lhakhang – the “Fertility Temple,” associated with the Divine Madman, reachable through a scenic walk past rice fields.

Explore Wangdue town and its markets.

Overnight in Punakha/Wangdue (Altitude: 1,300m).

After breakfast, drive to Paro and prepare for a highlight of the trip:

Taktshang Monastery Hike (Tiger’s Nest)

A 5-hour round-trip trek to Bhutan’s most iconic monastery, perched 900m above the Paro Valley. Guru Rinpoche meditated here, arriving on the back of a tigress—hence the name "Tiger's Nest."

This sacred pilgrimage site is one of the most unforgettable experiences in Bhutan.

Overnight in Paro.

After breakfast, drive to Chele La Pass (3,988m)—one of Bhutan’s highest motorable passes. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Jomolhari and fluttering prayer flags.

Visit:

  • Dzongdrakha Lhakhang – known as the “Mini Tiger’s Nest,” a cliffside temple complex.

  • Drukgyel Dzong – historic fortress ruins with stunning views of Mt. Chomolhari.

  • Kyichu Lhakhang – one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan.

Overnight in Paro (Altitude: 2,280m).

Drive back to Phuentsholing retracing beautiful landscapes and mountain roads.

En-route stops:

  • Chuzom viewpoint

  • Gedu University view area

  • Kharbandi Gompa (if missed on Day 1)

Explore the local market in the evening.

Overnight in Phuentsholing.

After breakfast, continue your onward journey to:

  • Bagdogra Airport

  • NJP Railway Station, or

  • Further tour extensions to Darjeeling, Gangtok, or Kalimpong.
