Itinerary

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where you will be received by your licensed Bhutanese guide and driver. After immigration and customs clearance, enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Thimphu (2,286 m), Bhutan’s capital city, passing rivers, forests, and traditional settlements.

Explore the artistic and cultural highlights of Thimphu:

  • National Library of Bhutan – Preserving ancient Buddhist manuscripts and texts

  • Institute of Zorig Chusum – Learn about Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts

  • Royal Textile Academy – Discover Bhutan’s unique textile weaving techniques, patterns, and symbolism

Overnight stay in Thimphu

Drive towards Punakha, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,500 ft). On clear days, enjoy panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan range and the iconic 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens.
Descend into the lush Punakha Valley, once Bhutan’s former capital.

Proceed to Bumthang via Wangduephodrang and Trongsa, enjoying breathtaking landscapes along the Puna Tsang Chhu River.
En route, view Wangduephodrang Dzong, dramatically perched on a ridge overlooking the valley. Continue through forested mountain roads toward central Bhutan.

Begin exploring Bhutan’s spiritual heartland with visits to:

  • Jambay Lhakhang – A 7th-century monastery built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan

Explore the serene Chokhor Valley and surrounding countryside.

Enjoy a full-day excursion to either:

  • Tang Valley – Bumthang’s most remote valley, passing the Dechenpelrithang Sheep Farm and Chel, birthplace of Tertön Pema Lingpa

Drive back toward Punakha, stopping at:

  • Trongsa Museum (Ta Dzong) – A former watchtower converted into a museum showcasing Bhutanese history and monarchy

Continue the scenic drive through mountain passes and valleys.

Drive to Nezergang and enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour hike through rice fields and forests to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten.
Built in 1999 by Her Majesty Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, the chorten was constructed for the protection of Bhutan and universal peace, offering stunning valley views.

Drive back to Paro Valley. Upon arrival, visit:

  • Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) – Meaning “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels”, built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, a fine example of Bhutanese architecture
